How to read the context of your birth

Understand your graph one layer at a time. Each section adds a layer and explains what it measures — from the zodiac grid and the moment you were born, to the angles, the houses and the planets moving through them.

01 · The celestial grid

Each sign is 30 degrees of the sky.

The ecliptic is the path the Sun appears to trace around Earth. Position along it is measured in degrees, counting east from the spring equinox, where the grid begins.

That number is the y-axis. A line every 30° gives twelve bands. Each line is where a sign begins — its cusp — and the band runs from that line up to the next one, which is the cusp of the following sign. The Aries cusp sits at 0°, Aries fills the sky up to 30°, and 30° is the Taurus cusp. A planet sitting exactly on a line is in the band above it, not below.

Aside — where zero is

0° is an event, not a place: the instant the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north each March. That point drifts about 1.4° per century, which has carried it out of the constellation Aries and into Pisces. Every longitude has to declare which year's equinox it counts from — this graph counts from the true equinox of your date.

02 · The Ascendant

This line is determined at your birth.

Your horizon is a second plane, and unlike the ecliptic it belongs to you alone. It cuts the ecliptic at two points. The eastern one — the degree climbing into view at the moment you were born — is the Ascendant. The western one, where the ecliptic is setting, is the Descendant. They sit exactly 180° apart, so on this axis they're always half the graph from each other.

Two numbers place them. Local sidereal time fixes what was overhead; latitude fixes how steeply the ecliptic met your horizon.

Everything on this axis so far was true for the whole planet. This line was true for one place — the location of your birth.

Aside — why the minute matters

Earth turns 360° a day, so the Ascendant advances about 1° every four minutes and crosses into a new sign roughly every two hours. Four minutes off moves it a degree. Twelve hours off puts it on the far side of the sky.

03 · The natal grid

A second grid, drawn from when and where you were born.

Your meridian is the plane standing upright through your horizon — due north, up through the point directly overhead, down to due south. It cuts the ecliptic twice: the Midheaven above, the Imum Coeli below. With the Ascendant and Descendant, that's four real intersections.

The other eight cusps aren't intersections of anything. They're interpolated between the angles, and the rule you use is a choice. Placidus gives each house an equal share of time rather than an equal span of degrees, so houses come out unequal — which is why they rarely land on the 30° cusps.

Your chart freezes all twelve at one instant and holds them. That's why they sit here as flat lines, the only flat lines on this graph.

Aside — frozen, not stopped

These lines are moving in the sky right now. The Ascendant makes a full circuit every day, and so do the other eleven. What's fixed is the reading, not the sky: your chart samples all twelve at the moment you were born and holds those values. The sky kept turning. These numbers didn't.

Aside — why unequal

The ecliptic is tilted 23.4° to the equator, so it meets your horizon at a different angle depending on which stretch is rising. Some stretches climb steeply and cross fast; others lie flat and take hours. Equal time means unequal degrees.

04 · The houses

Twelve bands, unevenly cut.

A house is the span between one line and the next — the same rule as the zodiac bands. The cusp is where it begins; the house is the space above it, up to the following line/cusp.

Numbering starts at the Ascendant. That cusp opens the first house, and the rest follow in order of increasing longitude until they come back around to it. The four angles fall at cusps I, IV, VII and X: Ascendant, Imum Coeli, Descendant, Midheaven.

The zodiac bands divide space. The houses divide your sky.

Aside — where the count wraps

The houses run in order up the axis, but the axis wraps at 360° back to 0°. If your Ascendant sits at 310°, houses I through III climb to the top of the graph and the count continues from the bottom. The sequence is unbroken; the drawing isn't.

05 · Reading the grid

Read up the vertical.

Pick a moment on the time axis and read straight up. You cross the 30° cusps and your twelve house lines, and where a house line falls inside a band is the sign on that cusp.

That's the whole of the house table every chart tool prints — twelve rows, each a cusp and the sign it started in. Only the starting line counts. Houses are unequal, so one can span two bands and still print as a single sign.

Aside — interception

Some bands contain no house line at all. That sign is intercepted: fully inside one house, with no cusp of its own, and it appears nowhere in the printed table. It happens more the further from the equator you were born, because Placidus houses grow more uneven with latitude.

06 · Planetary paths

A position for every moment.

Time is the x-axis. Your natal grid froze the sky at one instant; here the same calculation runs at every instant, and a body's position along the ecliptic becomes a continuous path.

Most of these paths climb. The planets orbit the Sun in the same direction — a leftover of the spinning disc of gas they all formed from — so from Earth they travel east through the bands in order. Slope is speed. The Moon crosses a band in just over two days. Pluto takes about twenty years.

A birth chart is a vertical read at one instant, the crossings you just learned to find. Every chart tool shows you that slice alone. This one keeps the time it was cut from.

Aside — the diagonal

The Sun's line is the ruler here. It climbs almost exactly one degree a day, a full circuit of the zodiac in a year, and it never runs backwards. Everything else reads against it: faster than the Sun climbs steeper, slower lies flatter. A reference you can check by eye rather than a scale you have to trust.

07 · Reading a body

Sign, house, degree.

Find your birth line and read up it until you reach a body's path. Where the two cross is that body's position at your birth moment, and it answers three questions at once.

Look at which band the crossing sits in — the band opening at the cusp below it. That band is the sign. How far up inside it is the degree, 0° to 30° from that cusp. The two house lines it falls between give the house, taking the number of the house cusp below.

The Sun crosses one band a month, so its answer holds for weeks. The Moon crosses one in about two days and can change all three between a morning and an evening birth.

Aside — why the time matters

Sun sign needs only your date, which is why it's the one printed in newspapers. The Moon needs the hour. So does the Ascendant, for a different reason: the Moon moves fast, while the Ascendant is stationary and you are the one turning past it.

08 · Retrograde

Nothing is actually going backwards.

Some paths turn and descend for weeks before climbing again. That's retrograde, and it's the one place where the graph shows something the wheel structurally cannot.

Nothing about the planet changes. This graph is geocentric — every position is where a body appears from Earth — and that vantage is the whole of it: nothing orbits the Sun backwards, so from the Sun there would be no retrograde to see. Earth and its neighbours are always overtaking one another, Earth passing the outer planets on the inside and the inner ones passing Earth, and the body being passed appears to slide backward against the bands — the same effect as passing a slower car. Both are still moving forward. Only the line of sight reverses.

It isn't a mood. It's a sign change in a number, and it happens on a schedule you can see coming.

Aside — how it's detected

Take the position vector and its rate of change and compute ω = x·ẏ − y·ẋ. Positive means the apparent motion is eastward, direct. Negative means westward, retrograde. Zero is the turning point — the station, where the path is briefly flat. Retrograde segments on this graph are drawn dashed; the dash begins and ends exactly where ω crosses zero.

09 · The planets

Slope is speed.

Add the rest and the graph holds everything a birth chart contains.

Mercury and Venus shadow the Sun's diagonal and never break far from it — they orbit inside Earth, so from here they can't appear far from it. Mars loops wide. Jupiter takes twelve years to cross the full chart, Saturn twenty-nine, Neptune one hundred sixty-five.

Steep lines are the fast bodies, and they're yours alone. Near-flat lines are the outer planets, flat enough that everyone born within a few years of you shares the same placement. A whole generation reads off one stretch of line.

Read up your birth line and every one of them gives you a sign, a house, and a degree. That's the chart — the same output any astrologer works from, with the time it was taken from still attached.

10 · Move the line

Your chart is one position on this axis.

Drag the birth line and every reading updates. The bands don't move, because they're fixed to the sky. Your house lines don't move either, because they were taken once and held.

Everything else does. The Moon runs, the Sun crawls a degree a day, the outer planets barely register. Push far enough and Mercury turns and descends, then turns again.

This is what the wheel leaves out. A chart is one instant, and every instant either side of it was also a chart.

Aside — what's on screen

The window holds a fixed span of time, and the whole graph is scaled to it. Widen it and the outer planets start to show slope; narrow it and the Moon stops looking vertical. Nothing about the bodies changes, only how much of the axis you're looking through.

11 · The points

None of these are objects.

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. That intersection is why eclipses only happen near them. They drift backwards through the zodiac on an 18.6-year cycle, which is why their lines run the wrong way.

Black Moon Lilith is the far end of the Moon's elliptical orbit. Also a calculated point. There's nothing there to photograph.

Three lines, no matter. They're on the graph because they're computable, not because something is out there.

Aside — which Lilith

Two standard calculations exist for Black Moon Lilith, mean and true, and they can differ by more than twenty degrees — most of a band. This graph uses the mean apogee. A third body called Dark Moon Lilith was proposed in the nineteenth century and never found; it isn't here, because there's nothing to compute.

12 · The minor bodies

The rest are real, just small.

Chiron, Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta, Eris. All with genuine ephemerides, all far smaller than anything already on the graph.

Speed sorts them the way it sorted the planets. The four asteroids orbit between Mars and Jupiter and move at roughly that pace, so their lines still climb. Chiron takes fifty years to cross the chart, Eris five hundred and fifty. Those two are the flat ones.

Add them and the graph is complete. Every line on it was calculated from an orbit, and there is nothing else to add.
